I was only suggesting fifty years of me

[livejournal.com profile] derspatchel and I are engaged.

I gave him a copy of The Lady's Not for Burning. He gave me Tom Swift and His Repelatron Skyway. I brought the rings: a design of two cats, side by side. At the Friendly Toast, we signed our names to the question on the frontispiece of one book and the finale of the other.

(We are still making wedding plans. It is with great self-restraint that I have not titled this post THIS WILL ALL BE GONE INTO AT THE PROPER TIME.)

We are very, very happy.

Congratulations!

_The Lady's Not for Burning_ is an excellent engagement gift. (I'm sure the other is too, I'm just not familiar with it.)

All right! You've done your worst. A misadventure
So intolerable, hell could not do more.
Nothing in the world could come and touch me
And you have to come and be the damnable
Exception. I was nicely tucked up for the night
Of eternity, and, like a restless dream
Of a fool's paradise, you, with a rainbow where
Your face is and an ignus fatuus
Worn like a rose in your girdle, come pursued
By fire, and presto! The bedclothes are on the floor
And I, the tomfool, love you.

Also, I may have been too young, the first time I heard The Lady's Not For Burning. It was on the radio, I was still a child, and I misheard or misunderstood. What I heard...?

But it's not a dog at all. It's a witch:
A rather appealing brindle witch with many fleas.

Which is - of course! - what I still hear, every time. (And, damn it, I knew what "brindle" meant! Apparently "bitch" eluded me, or my ears censored it out because it was a Bad Word, or whatever. "Witch" it is, and "witch" it will always be, for me.)

YAY!!!!! Dammit, LJ doesn't have room for all the smiley faces, either.
Congratulations, and may the both of you have all the happiness in the world and all the time in the world to enjoy it.

I am thrilled for both of you.

I felt a great happybounce in the Force, as if millions of geeky folk across metro-Camberville all threw their heads back and went YAAAAAYYY.

In all seriousness, congratulations to you both. :)

Tom Swift and His Repelatron Skyway

Semi-OT, but that's the one Tom Swift I've ever read!

Hey, congrats.

(Do report back on the Swift, in due order -- I haven't read that one. Not that I've read many of the Tom Jr.s.)
