Because I have spent limited time on social media in the last few days, I had not realized until this afternoon that Sesame Street's Count von Count has become an election meme:
The beloved Muppet, who first appeared on Sesame Street during Richard Nixon's administration, seems to have gained new fame as an online mascot for those resisting Trump's demand to halt the vote count and his supporters who doubt the legitimacy of the ballots being tallied in some battleground states.
People have been responding to a Thursday morning tweet by Trump with pictures and memes of Count von Count holding up numbers, and the defiant rallying cry: "You can't stop the Count."
I am delighted.
ashlyme just linked me a particularly splendid illustration. I feel Joe Simon and Jack Kirby would be surprised but pleased. (Jim Henson would just have had someone eaten or blown up.) My brain immediately subtitled it "Down for the Count." I hope my brain knows what it's doing. For whatever it's worth, it was right about the capital of Nevada earlier today.
While we're speaking of things you can do with numbers, there's now the option of donating to Romancing the Runoff, a donation drive for the Georgia Senate runoffs supporting Fair Fight, the New Georgia Project, and Black Voters Matter, all of which had a measurable effect on the tallies coming out of Georgia now.
I still wish my state governor could have been bothered to cast his vote like a fully responsible human being, but at least he is on the record repudiating the claims of fraud and conspiracy coming out of the White House.
