Are you my boy with demons in your sleeve?

As I continue to feel terrible and limited in foodstuffs, I wanted to make dinner with a minimum of time and effort, so I opened a tin of smoked sardines and a tin of mackerel in olive oil and cooked them with leftover basmati rice and black pepper and one of the seasoning blends that [personal profile] spatch and I refer to as "allium in a can" and I believe I succeeded in making totally inauthentic kedgeree. It was hot and tasted good. I bet I could have added yogurt if I had been thinking straight.

Sounds similar to a hot-weather meal we had a couple of times recently - steamed and lightly pickled sliced zucchini (sliced lengthwise, like sandwich pickles), with brown rice and smoked herring.

I have a thing I call Swedish Depression Supper, which is opening a tin of mustard herring and eating it on dark bread, with an apple or some raisins on the side, and it is nice and gets supper in me. Yours is better than that I bet, and Swedish Depression Supper is already nice.

(This is the lowest rung. The next highest rung is Swedish Panic Supper, which is cooking a piece of fish in grainy mustard, cooking something green, and eating them both with dark bread. SPS is for when you have a little cooking energy but cannot figure out what you want to eat. SDS is for when you just Cannot Even.)

A dish I make about once a week involves canned mackerel, shredded cabbage, black mustard seeds, a hot pepper, and lemon and soy sauce seasoning. Your dish with basmati rice and black pepper made me think of it. Yum.
