Yesterday was good. The sky never really cleared, but it brightened into that kind of odd white overcast that has no shadows and glares off anything that reflects, and by sunset it had started to break up into sandbar clouds; and there was the sea. [livejournal.com profile] fleurdelis28 picked me up around noon and after driving through Fall River to observe the weirdness of signs like Borden Apartments and Lizzie's Pastries (which made us both think of Sweeney Todd), we went for seafood in Mattapoisett and walked up and down a sandy beach on West Island. Cormorants and gulls were perched on huge boulders covered in barnacles and seaweed standing out of the water as the tide was coming in. We rolled up our pants and waded out past our knees; we saw a horseshoe crab in the water, and then another that she spotted and we rescued from dying upside-down on the beach. I used to know what those paper-thin, iridescent yellow shells were called. My hair tied itself in knots with the wind. It was lovely.

My poem "Evighed" has been accepted by Electric Velocipede. Since I wrote it last summer while in a seagoing frame of mind, I find this very fitting.

Now for a depressingly landbound activity: I have to clean the house.
