I am very morbidly amused by the white nationalist who wants the alt-righters to "knock it off" with the explicit Nazi callbacks because people notice that sort of thing and will therefore make an effort to stop them, whereas if they stick to dogwhistles and plausible deniability, they'll be able to get away with pretending they're just the newest wing of the Republican Party and then they can really get some white supremacy in high places. Considered in that sense, man, heil away.

I was saying to derspatchel last night that it interests me in a non-academic way that so many people in this country apparently want to be Nazis. I don't mean I am surprised at the depth or the virulence of their anti-Semitism, racism, and so forth, although I am furious with Donald Trump for giving it a platform and the media for giving it legitimacy; I mean I am actually a little surprised that it's taken the form of Hitler salutes and Goebbels buzzwords. The resurgence of the KKK and the multiplying Confederate flags do not puzzle me; that's race hatred as a homegrown American institution. The use of the swastika to threaten and scare, that's also not new, like the white power skinheads subculture. The aggressive mainstreaming of this flavor of neo-Nazism is part of what feels different to me, obviously, but also the fact that it's so Nazi and barely neo. Yet another reason I agree we should not allow them to rebrand themselves.
