There are no stars at all for some of us

Hey! Internet! I've just been talking about how much it sucks when a novel kills off its queer characters. Especially when there's, like, one of them and they're the one who doesn't make it. Can someone point me toward a list of books where that doesn't happen? Spoilers, whatever.

Fumi Yoshinaga, the author of Antique Bakery in general has very good stuff. There's a lot of explicit sexual material (she's written a lot of yaoi) in her work but she's one of the best of the yaoi manga-ka's at creating characters that act like people instead of yaoi archetypes.

She also wrote Ooku, which has interesting gender things going on.

I've read the first volume of Ooku, a couple of years back, and keep meaning to read more. The first was fascinating, and I've heard good things.

However, warning that the series needs almost every trigger warning I can think of based on what I read in the FIRST VOLUME. It's not sensationalist, but lots of variously terrible things happen to lots of people (and animals).
