And many's the battle I have fought, though ankle-deep in blood

I’ve really stopped sleeping. Why the hell is Ice Cold in Alex (1958) not out on DVD in this country?

(It'll be out on Blu-Ray in the UK on the 13th, which does me no good whatsoever because Blu-Ray also has region codes.)

On top of everything else, I seem to have done something to my neck and shoulder; it's been making me nauseous all day. I would quite possibly kill for a good backrub right now. Or at least maim slightly.

Never let a chiropractor touch your neck. Seriously. There have been fatalities.

Rats. The MedScape link seems not to be working from here. Just Google the string: "neck manipulation" chiropractor fatal. Fifth link down, with footnotes.

Thanks for the link. I worried about this at the start as well, but found that most reports show 34 deaths due to manipulations since the early 1900s, as opposed to nearly 50,000 other medical deaths (though as always, not everything is reported). I still never liked the idea of snapping someone's neck, and can definitely see where it could cause the problems they describe.

Nucca chiropractic is a subtle manipulation, actually sometimes not even quite touching the neck at all. Have you heard reports on that as well? My daughter has rather severe scoliosis and had to wear a lift in her shoe since childhood. Nerves were affected in her spine, causing a lot of problems with digestion, among other things. Since she's used the Nucca chiropractic technique, she no longer wears a lift; her hips are even; and she doesn't have the digestive problems anymore.

So, it's hard to say what we're willing to risk for better quality of life. If her back had remained that crooked, I'm not sure what the consequences of that would be. At the same time, we don't know what long-term consequences could arise from the manipulations. It's a strange procedure. Sometimes my daughter never feels the woman touch her, and yet she leaves with her posture straight again.

I am so very glad your daughter has found something that works for her, and I hope without ill effect. All medical interventions are about risk/benefit.

Sorry to leap in so fiercely, but science-based medicine is one of my hobbyhorses.

Ah, sorry, I just found this email--I'm cleaning up the long trail I've fallen behind on!

I'm all for science-based medicine, unless nothing that has been tried is working, though I'd say I'm wary of too many medications. Mostly, I go for a nice balance. :)
