My curiosity found a cavity and something to stick in
And then my night became unnecessarily exciting when Hestia standing on top of the refrigerator first got the freezer door open and then panicked because half her feet were on the top of the refrigerator and half her feet were on the swinging freezer door and what with one thing and another I have just finished swishing my mouth out with a fifty-fifty solution of hydrogen peroxide on orders from urgent care, because when I caught my panicked falling cat I mostly caught her with my face. One of her claws went clear through my upper lip, like a barbell. I got her loose before she could struggle further, so I am not in an emergency room in the middle of the night with some undoubtedly nice-mannered resident stitching up my mouth, but I have two exciting diagonal furrows and one puncture that bled eagerly throughout my conversation with urgent care about wound cleaning and the antibiotics that I need to pick up from the pharmacy first thing tomorrow morning, because the combination of cat claw and the human mouth means I am a high risk for infection, which would be the absolute last thing I need. Hestia freaked out and I have reassured her that she is still a good cat and I love her, even if she needs her claws clipped stat. We joke about Autolycus Removal Services, but I guess the other business on the premises is Hestia's Piercings and Tattoo. I assume the wound will close quickly if I keep it clean and don't put any actual metal through it, but in the meantime, God damn, this hurts.

Thank you. The summiting of Mount Refrigerator is not usually this dramatic!

Thank you. I think it is healing as fast as I can expect; I just still think the whole thing is ridiculous.

Thank you. Of all the things I worry about, getting fishhooked in the face by a cat was clearly not far enough up the list!

She's a good cat and I know she did not mean to hurt me. I'll just see if we can skip the scarification next time.

Thank you! The inside of my mouth is already healing as if it were a bitten lip, which I really appreciate. I suspect the outside is going to take longer, but that's what the antibiotics and repeated application of hydrogen peroxide are for.

I do not recommend any of it as a recreational experience!

Thank you! (I am seriously thinking we might take her to a professional. She is spiny.)

I wish I'd thought of that last night.
That is terribly unjust given the good service you were rendering. I'm very glad they're indoor cats, that should make the cuts and puncture less likely to get infected--as will your regimen. Still: OUCH.
Thank you! It was very much "No good deed goes without stabbing in the face." But Hestia is still affectionate and the inside of my lip is already closing without apparent complications, so it could have been much worse. I didn't even think until my mother pointed it out that I was lucky not to catch that same puncturing claw in the eye.

Thank you! It was not what I expected when I walked into the kitchen for another mug of hot water!

Poor you.

Thank you.

Fortunately, we were down to gusting wind and occasional rain by then, but it would have been unreasonable even on a nice night. I'm just glad I did not have to go to the ER for stitches.

Thank you. I have transferred some of this sentiment to Hestia in the form of petting.

The face is healing and the cat has recovered her normal imperious, occasionally slightly squirelly equanimity, but it was definitely not the most recreational way to spend my night.

Thank you! I do appear to be healing cleanly, and now I get very nervous when there's a cat on the refrigerator above me.

It wasn't my eye and I didn't have to go to the ER! I call silver lining!

Thank you. It seems to be healing cleanly, but I would not encourage Hestia to try a second time.
