Can I show you this state of mind?
There were some good things today:
1. My replacement phone arrived from Verizon. It is of sufficient vintage that the activation and data transfer instructions included in the box are inapplicable. (This is a point in its favor. I need it to handle calls and text messages. The fact that my old phone could take blurry little pictures was endearing, but not a life requirement. Anything else is just complicating matters.) I will bring it in to the Verizon store tomorrow.
2. I have a doctor's appointment set for tomorrow. Better if it had been today, but right now I am taking what I can get.
3. At dinner tonight, I ate zaru soba correctly by instinct. All the while I was dipping the noodles and nori into the little flask of sauce, I worried that I was doing it wrong and looking gauche (I said to
derspatchel "like a person dunking their mac and cheese in beer," at which point he told me not to give hipster restaurant culture any ideas), I just couldn't figure out any other way to eat them. The internet tells me I did the right thing and wasn't even indelicate in wishing I could drink the sauce afterward. I feel weirdly accomplished. On reflection I'm wondering if I got the idea from A Tale of Time City's cornpone with malty soy.
4. Before dinner, we visited kittens. We are hoping to adopt. It's not a certainty. Wish us luck!
5. I can find a lot of Daisy Chainsaw by Googling.
Question for the wider internet!
Can anyone recommend a restaurant for tempeh in this city? It's not on Grasshopper's menu and I've been warned against True Bistro. (I have also given up on the Tamp at Diesel, as I ordered it three times last summer and three times in a row they made it wrong. I don't even know how that happens.) It's a foodstuff I like very much and I don't know where to find it (a) in Boston (b) that won't congratulate me on being holistic to myself. Even Life Alive doesn't seem to offer it on their regular menu and they're the place that puts raw lentils in their hummus. Blue Shirt just has tofu and depressing music.

That is an eminently reasonable method of living by me!

Veggie Galaxy has tempeh bacon, which tastes very strongly of citrus glaze and not a whole lot else.

. . . I may do that next time, then. It's really tasty.

Yeah. For years I thought I didn't like tofu. It turned out what I don't like is tofu when it's being made to pretend it's meat. When it's treated like a feature of a dish in its own right, it is fantastic stuff and I enjoy cooking with it. I haven't had much experience of seitan, but this is definitely my feeling about tempeh. It tastes awesome as itself.
Now I'm wondering if I should skip the vegan restaurant route entirely and just start looking for nearby Indonesian food. If there is any.
Maybe HMart sells tempeh.

Harvest used to but I haven't been there since they moved locations and dramatically scaled down their selection. Super 88 in Allston also had it last time I went looking.

2. As regards your (b) requirement on the Tempeh: full agreement. Earlier this week, I was looking around for a birthday present for Ciro, and related to this was browsing etsy, looking at malachite bracelets (although I ultimately went with theater tickets instead of jewelry). Pretty much every option wanted to tell me in detail how the malachite would magically cure a number of illnesses and give the wearer superpowers. NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. I would like to buy awesome-looking rocks; assertion of metaphysical properties not so much.

Our landlord approved them! We have submitted an application to Angell MSPCA and are waiting to find out what happens next.

Exactly! And sometimes when you want to eat a soy product you could care less about your arteries; it just tastes good.

Sadly, no. The Diesel's the best when they get it right and it's not great. The place in Waltham does it okay too if I remember correctly.
Actually, there might be a tempeh sandwich at the diner in Central? I haven't had it if it exists, though.

Dammit. Thanks. I was afraid of that.

Masao's Kitchen?

Veggie Galaxy seems to have tempeh bacon on its menu, which is kind of missing the point for me. I can eat actual bacon if I want. (I don't often.) I realize this option is not available to everyone who eats at Veggie Galaxy, but I am looking more for tempeh that tastes like tempeh, because I like that.

Yay, phone. Yay, doctor. Yay, music.

Landlord said yes! Now we hope Angell MSPCA says the same.

Generally, if your landlord is okay with it, the rescue organization will be. They are primarily concerned with the animals not ending up somewhere that they are not allowed.
Kittens are so challenging and fun.

Our landlord okayed cats this morning. We contacted Angell this afternoon. We did not expect to come home from an evening of errands to discover our kittens are available for adoption on Thursday.
So, by the end of this week, kittens.

Oh, wow. That's so soon! Time to kitten-proof, or at least make sure there are no obvious kitten-sized dangers.

We were kind of expecting next week! Tonight and tomorrow morning will be very busy.

It's one of my favorite dishes in summer.

I can't remember ever eating it before. As far as I can recall, my introduction to soba noodles was the pad thai soba at Lemon Tree. (Tasty, but I don't know what the soba brought to it.) I really like this form!

It's dead easy to make if you can purchase the sauce ready-made -- then you just boil noodles and you're good to go. :-) Making the sauce, however, is a fair pain in the neck.

Thank you!
That's a good icon.

I'm still puzzling over the idea of putting raw lentils in hummus, while thinking hopefully landlord approval thoughts re: kittens.

Absolutely. I used to eat there with some regularity between 2007 and 2010—I haven't since then, but it's no farther on the buses than the Deluxe Town Diner, which
Alternately, I could just learn to cook it myself. Maybe they sell it at HMart.
I'm still puzzling over the idea of putting raw lentils in hummus,
It was lentil hummus, but that is not an excuse.
while thinking hopefully landlord approval thoughts re: kittens.
We just heard back this morning! Landlord approves the adoption of kittens. Now we start paperwork with the MSPCA!
P.S. Hello! You're commenting on LJ! I'm glad you're recovering!

Huzzah for landlord approval! I hope the adoption and paperwork process goes well and smoothly. :)
And yes, I'm doing remarkably well, actually, I think significantly better than projected. As a result, it mostly feels like I'm just hanging out at home an awful lot for some reason, not like I'm having this required convalescence. It's extremely odd having this much free time, but I really can't complain!

Do you have any idea what they turned into? I don't think I was ever at the original restaurant!
What warned you off of True Bistro? I had a bizarre experience there attempting to eat dinner with jadasc and I'm wondering if that's common.
I've never eaten there myself; I've been told by multiple people that they simply aren't very good. What happened to you and

Off my radar completely until I ran into that video. Thank you again. I am really enjoying Eleventeen.

OMG ideas! Mac & cheese with the white sauce beer flavored! Or beer that's slightly hoppy, slightly fruity, and slightly processed cheesy!
I do hope you get a kitten! If Verizon has sent you a phone, can a kitten be far behind?
no subject
. . . I think the first one has a better shot of being edible. Kind of like pre-fab fondue: beer and cheese sauce with the starch already in it! Only, you know, less disgusting than that sounds. I can't believe I'm already figuring out how to turn this concept into food.
I do hope you get a kitten! If Verizon has sent you a phone, can a kitten be far behind?
They were not!
