Can I show you this state of mind?

There were some good things today:

1. My replacement phone arrived from Verizon. It is of sufficient vintage that the activation and data transfer instructions included in the box are inapplicable. (This is a point in its favor. I need it to handle calls and text messages. The fact that my old phone could take blurry little pictures was endearing, but not a life requirement. Anything else is just complicating matters.) I will bring it in to the Verizon store tomorrow.

2. I have a doctor's appointment set for tomorrow. Better if it had been today, but right now I am taking what I can get.

3. At dinner tonight, I ate zaru soba correctly by instinct. All the while I was dipping the noodles and nori into the little flask of sauce, I worried that I was doing it wrong and looking gauche (I said to [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel "like a person dunking their mac and cheese in beer," at which point he told me not to give hipster restaurant culture any ideas), I just couldn't figure out any other way to eat them. The internet tells me I did the right thing and wasn't even indelicate in wishing I could drink the sauce afterward. I feel weirdly accomplished. On reflection I'm wondering if I got the idea from A Tale of Time City's cornpone with malty soy.

4. Before dinner, we visited kittens. We are hoping to adopt. It's not a certainty. Wish us luck!

5. I can find a lot of Daisy Chainsaw by Googling.

Question for the wider internet!

Can anyone recommend a restaurant for tempeh in this city? It's not on Grasshopper's menu and I've been warned against True Bistro. (I have also given up on the Tamp at Diesel, as I ordered it three times last summer and three times in a row they made it wrong. I don't even know how that happens.) It's a foodstuff I like very much and I don't know where to find it (a) in Boston (b) that won't congratulate me on being holistic to myself. Even Life Alive doesn't seem to offer it on their regular menu and they're the place that puts raw lentils in their hummus. Blue Shirt just has tofu and depressing music.

1. I still hold on to my phone that doesn't even take pictures. The tablet plus WiFi (plus Chad and his smartphone) are close enough approximations for now, and it means no monthly charge.

I've seen people drink the soba sauce, in Japan no less. It might still be rude or some kind of class marker, but it's definitely not a thing only Americans do!

Veggie Galaxy has tempeh bacon, which tastes very strongly of citrus glaze and not a whole lot else.

1. Kittens!

2. As regards your (b) requirement on the Tempeh: full agreement. Earlier this week, I was looking around for a birthday present for Ciro, and related to this was browsing etsy, looking at malachite bracelets (although I ultimately went with theater tickets instead of jewelry). Pretty much every option wanted to tell me in detail how the malachite would magically cure a number of illnesses and give the wearer superpowers. NO ABSOLUTELY NOT. I would like to buy awesome-looking rocks; assertion of metaphysical properties not so much.

Harvest used to but I haven't been there since they moved locations and dramatically scaled down their selection. Super 88 in Allston also had it last time I went looking.

Sadly, no. The Diesel's the best when they get it right and it's not great. The place in Waltham does it okay too if I remember correctly.

Actually, there might be a tempeh sandwich at the diner in Central? I haven't had it if it exists, though.

Wishing you kitten karma!

Yay, phone. Yay, doctor. Yay, music.

om nom nom zaru soba

It's one of my favorite dishes in summer.

Maybe The Red Lentil, if Watertown is close enough to count as in Boston? I'm not the hugest tempeh fan, so I haven't tried theirs, to be able to vouch personally. I do like many of their other dishes, and they do offer tempeh, so it may be worth a shot.

I'm still puzzling over the idea of putting raw lentils in hummus, while thinking hopefully landlord approval thoughts re: kittens.

Best of luck with the kittens. They are ridiculously cute.

I first had it in Japan, and now that I'm out in California, I can find it in some restaurants and (during the summer months) in the Japanese grocery store across the street.

It's dead easy to make if you can purchase the sauce ready-made -- then you just boil noodles and you're good to go. :-) Making the sauce, however, is a fair pain in the neck.

Yeah, I was thinking the reuben sounded conceptially similar to the bacon issue, but the fact that they offer it as a side seemed hopeful.

Huzzah for landlord approval! I hope the adoption and paperwork process goes well and smoothly. :)

And yes, I'm doing remarkably well, actually, I think significantly better than projected. As a result, it mostly feels like I'm just hanging out at home an awful lot for some reason, not like I'm having this required convalescence. It's extremely odd having this much free time, but I really can't complain!

Fingers crossed!

I can't find my copy of the LoveSickPleasure EP, though I have a couple of the songs in .ogg format that I slipped in to a folder with the album.

(I said to derspatchel "like a person dunking their mac and cheese in beer," at which point he told me not to give hipster restaurant culture any ideas)

OMG ideas! Mac & cheese with the white sauce beer flavored! Or beer that's slightly hoppy, slightly fruity, and slightly processed cheesy!

I do hope you get a kitten! If Verizon has sent you a phone, can a kitten be far behind?

[identity profile] humglum.livejournal.com 2014-05-21 03:36 am (UTC)(link)

Generally, if your landlord is okay with it, the rescue organization will be. They are primarily concerned with the animals not ending up somewhere that they are not allowed.
Kittens are so challenging and fun.

Seconding on Red Lentil. Also, it's possible that tempeh available at the Chinatown incarnation of Budda Delight, which I think has a new name now?

I am curious. What warned you off of True Bistro? I had a bizarre experience there attempting to eat dinner with [livejournal.com profile] jadasc and I'm wondering if that's common.

[identity profile] cucumberseed.livejournal.com 2014-05-21 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
:D

I had no idea you didn't already know about them, or I would have sent them over sooner!

*hugs*

Oh, wow. That's so soon! Time to kitten-proof, or at least make sure there are no obvious kitten-sized dangers.
