It's fascinating to contemplate; I suspect he would have gotten even more typed as a horror star afterward, but the thought of a Dracula with the physical otherness of Cesare or Gwynplaine's awareness of monstrosity is almost irresistible. On the other hand, he thought his English wasn't good enough; and he would never have worked with Powell and Pressburger if he had stayed in Hollywood through the '30's, so it's not like we got nothing in this universe. But maybe he could have done Dracula and then gone back to Germany . . .
He certainly has a most insouciant way with a crucifix.
