sovay: (I Claudius)

We had too much time to find for ourselves

I translated this tonight for one of [livejournal.com profile] strange_selkie's projects-in-progress and she said I should post it, so that's my excuse. Have some Catullus 5:

Let us live, my Lesbia, and let us love
and to the gossip of censorious old men
give all the credit of a copper coin.
Suns can set and return again:
with us, once our brief light is gone,
one unending night is ours to sleep.
So give me a thousand kisses, then a hundred,
then a thousand again, then a second hundred,
then straight on another thousand, then a hundred,
then after making up so many thousands
we will scatter them all, so that we may not know
and neither can any ill-wisher look us awry,
when he knows the number of our kisses.

LiveJournal is currently up, but experiencing some temporary issues. You may encounter occasional site slowness, pages failing to load or returning error 503, and error 500 when attempting to post long entries and pictures. We are working to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.

LJ apparently hangs out with my muse. I told you. They went out and got wrecked on vodka tonics.

*sings the rest of the song, cheerily*

...And there actually are dicks, for once. OH MY PEARLS.

That's lovely--kisses as numerous as petals scattering in spring or leaves in fall. And the reminder of our brief day and too long night hanging in there in the middle... yes, never mind gathering rosebuds: be liberal with kisses. There is no sense in hoarding them.

I do like Pet Shop Boys. I like "West End Girls," and I really like their version of "You Were Always on My Mind."

I think I love Catullus.

Sultry is perfect. Much, much better than smoldering here, I think.

(love the photo on that wikipedia page of the temple)

Oh, beautifully done!

(And you have that coin, just in case.)

Lovely translation!

I can't really speak to the translation aspect, given my sub-rotten Latin, except to say that, given my vague memories of having read other renderings of Catullus 5 it seems appropriate. But, more importantly, I can say that I find this a lovely poem. Well done!

This is lovely. Can I request Catullus 101 at some point?

It's probably my favorite short poem (i.e., not an epic) in the Latin language.

I notice you mentioned this as a work in progress; are you eventually going to translate the whole set, or just selections? Either way, I'm excited to see more, as your translations are gorgeous.

You've already said you would, so I don't feel grabby asking; 101 makes me cry.

Then again, so does the one where I think the friend loses his wife?

Anyway, I can't wait.

Beautiful.
