I got beat up in that alley
So first Livejournal was under political attack, and then my internet access was (non-politically) tarfu from sometime last night until about half an hour ago, and this morning I had to see a dentist on an emergency basis. If you want content, have the posts I made during the LJ freeze. I am mostly going to bed.
I will, however, endeavor to be awake enough tomorrow to write up Captain America: The First Avenger (2011), which I managed nonetheless to see with my brother tonight; it was as terrific as I had hoped from its trailer, and in some surprising ways. I don't usually want sequels to movies, but I found myself faintly sorry this one wasn't about to be followed by anything but The Avengers—it's got that good a cast and set-up. It really is rare that I like protagonists, especially of things like summer blockbusters.

The problem is that the film needs to close in the same layer of time it opened in—and the last line is a genuine heart-punch—but I still wouldn't have minded taking another movie to get there. I cannot remember the last time I felt that way about anything that was part of a franchise.

TARFU: Totally And Royally F'd Up. It's the acronym nobody knows in that family. I like it.

Dear Lord. Universe, please stop beating on sovay.

Well, on the bright side, they could see me on an emergency basis . . .
(It is appreciated.)

I'm delighted that you enjoyed the film--I'm looking forward to seeing your write-up. I'm also thinking this maybe means I should see it myself.

Write-up delayed on account of exhaustion, but I seriously recommend the film.

On the subject of recommendations, I saw Cowboys And Aliens last night, and found it rather better than I was expecting to find it. Some Stuffed in the Fridge--I can't quite decide if it was a justified trope or not--but there were decisions made that I think it would have been easier on the film-makers' parts not to make, such as a character allowed to survive and find redemption whom I think many writers would have most likely allowed to find redemption only in heroic sacrifice.*
*I have to admit I might well have gone that way, myself.

I shall try not to be judgmental until I can see for myself.

Hey, that's a recommendation by me—unless it's brilliantly done, i.e., Sydney Carton, I have become very unimpressed with that trope.

Indeed. I hope I've managed not to drop any spoilers on you. I'll be curious to hear what you think.

Aye. It's a recommendation from me as well, at least in this case. I was rather pleased by it.

He's effectively playing a dual role and he's great—I do not traditionally follow actors of that particular pin-up style, but I'll watch out for whatever he does next.
But the rest of the cast was terrific, too.
Right! I'd have happily watched more of them!
