Mayday! Mayday!

I wonder why it's May Day? The distress call . . . Why do you say "May Day"? It's only a Bank Holiday. Why not Shrove Tuesday? Or Ascension Sunday? "Ascension Sunday! Ascension Sunday! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost!"

Don't think I know [livejournal.com profile] dgr8bob, though based on his friendslist, I might. Anyway. Any excuse to quote Red Dwarf is a good one.

"So what is it?"
"I've never seen one, no one has, but I'm guessing it's a white hole."
"A white hole?"
"Just as a black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe, a white hole will spew it back in."
"So what is it?"
"I've never seen one..."

*throttles urge to quote further*

Oh, I don't remember that episode.

"You'll like my shipmates.
"Well, some of them.
"Well, one of them.
"Maybe."

"The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost!"?!

It makes me so happy to know that their are other religions and cultures out there whose calendrical thought processes are fully as weird as the Jews'.

Finals must really be getting to me -- I just now realized that, whatever is on the fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost, it can't possibly be Ascension Sunday...
