I wonder why it's May Day? The distress call . . . Why do you say "May Day"? It's only a Bank Holiday. Why not Shrove Tuesday? Or Ascension Sunday? "Ascension Sunday! Ascension Sunday! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost! The fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost!"

I was introduced to Red Dwarf at Brandeis, by dgr8bob: it stuck. And I'd already sort of blown my best May Day music on an earlier post, so—why not? It's such a good line.

Don't think I know dgr8bob, though based on his friendslist, I might. Anyway. Any excuse to quote Red Dwarf is a good one.

"So what is it?"
"I've never seen one, no one has, but I'm guessing it's a white hole."
"A white hole?"
"Just as a black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe, a white hole will spew it back in."
"So what is it?"
"I've never seen one..."

It's from one of the later seasons, not sure which one. (The first two are my favorites, hands down. It's something about the very low budget and the character work; though I don't hate the third season either.) Probably I should have attributed the dialogue: that's Kryten, Lister, Rimmer, Kryten, Rimmer. On the other hand, you could probably tell . . .

It makes me so happy to know that their are other religions and cultures out there whose calendrical thought processes are fully as weird as the Jews'.

Finals must really be getting to me -- I just now realized that, whatever is on the fifteenth Wednesday after Pentecost, it can't possibly be Ascension Sunday...

Thats okay. Given the calendrical proclivities of the Catholic Church, I'm sure it's still something peculiar.
