1. I was very pleased to see Douglas Hodge win a Tony for his performance of Albin in La Cage aux Folles; I was also pleased that the musical itself won Best Revival, since I consider it the rare case where the revival is better than the original. I am not sure why Memphis won for Best New Musical, since either Fela! or American Idiot would have been my obvious choice on music alone and none of the numbers performed over the course of the evening did anything to change my mind. At least the awards ceremony opened with Green Day's "Holiday"—performed not by the cast of American Idiot, but by the actual band. I hadn't been expecting that.

2. Someone has put the 1954 Nineteen Eighty-Four up on YouTube. Peter Cushing, Yvonne Mitchell, André Morell, Donald Pleasence; script by Nigel Kneale. I'm still hoping for a Criterion DVD, but until such time as that should happen, I'll be over here with my telescreen.

3. Remind me to talk about Natasha Solomons' Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English (2010).
