Today's mail brought copies of three books I had been eagerly awaiting:
time_shark's Disturbing Muses and Strange Wisdoms of the Dead, and
erzebet's Snowblind. The first of these is a cycle of phantasmagoric biographies that reinvents the lives of famous painters out of their artwork, with surreal and otherworldly results; the second is a substantial collection (with a gorgeous cover) of poetry and prose on topics as diverse as green petunias, time thieves, Lovecraftian proselytizers, redrawn moons, and the dangerous tarot of the New World; and the third is a slender, haunting compilation of poems inspired by the Märchen of the Brothers Grimm and photographs taken by the author's great-grandmother. All are beautifully put together, although the last gets extra points for being hand-bound. I'm also responsible for the Greek text in Strange Wisdoms . . ., so if you find major errors in translation, lay those not at
time_shark's feet.
(I read these all while I was waiting to donate to the Yale-Harvard Blood Drive, only to discover that I was a few days short of my requisite waiting period: they would not take my blood. I shouldn't feel so disappointed. I blame Forever Knight.)
time_shark also pointed me toward Strange Horizons' very nice review of The Alchemy of Stars: Rhysling Award Winners Showcase, in which my poem "Matlacihuatl's Gift" appears. But there's a lot of good stuff in there.
Off to put together handouts for section tomorrow: Kirke and Chunhyang. I wish I knew Korean.
