This journey isn't over

I am thankful that I have two parents who know how—and encouraged me—to cook, and friends who I want to cook for.

Last night, my father and I saw Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová, and various members of the Frames at the Orpheum Theatre. Colm Mac Con Iomaire is a violinist from the otherworld. I suppose it's appropriate to the subject matter that I am now obsessed with "Fitzcarraldo." But I can't imagine living without music: can you be thankful for air to breathe?

I didn't get my fire, but the air smells like snow. To bed.

It was pretty good, thanks.

T-day was fairly traditional--turkey, cranberry-pecan dressing, brussels sprouts sautéed in walnut oil, and sweet potatoes in coconut cream--but I got from the NY Times food section a new way to carve the turkey (taking the bird apart in the kitchen and slicing the breast and thigh across the grain) which, I think, really improved matters.

Today I spent far too much time reading a not-very-good SF novel about a Swedish archaeological expedition to an Ireland completely blanketed in radioactive ash due to a nuclear plant disaster in Co. Armagh. That and hacking my way through Darko Suvin's Metamorphoses of Science Fiction.

I hope it's been a good Leftover Turkey Day for you.

You're welcome. It's originally a Frames song; the version I heard at the Orpheum was slightly more acoustic, without percussion and with Markéta Irglová, but the wild violin is the same and the first time his voice vaulted up into the chorus, it blew me away. I really want to see Fitzcarraldo (1982) now. Your icon is perfect.
