And last night I dreamed of reading a collection of short stories from the next universe over where Rudyard Kipling was an Anglophile rakshasa. If my subconscious was trying to say something about cultural appropriation, I think it missed the boat.

Oh my. I wish I could read that collection as well.

I once had a brief conversation in a dream with someone who was studying the theological writings of a vampire mystic. And someone else was studying the little-known plectral technique of playing the viola da gamba, invented by a gambist who had, before becoming a professional musician, worked as an overseer on a galley.

I suppose Rakshasas wouldn't be that interested in nationalism, especially not over exploitation and cruel bastardry. Given what little I know of the history of India as a British colony, I suppose they might be Anglophiles.

Still, Kipling as a rakshasa. That's going to stick with me.

You know, I sort of wrote at least one of those stories...in "Ring of Fire" the narrator is indeed a rhakshasa, and is doing a fair Kipling imitation. Probably intentionally. It certainly likes to eat British people.

Based on my previous attempts to write historical fiction—and that without attempting to include anyone from real life—I think it's going to take years of research. But I want to.

I have read "Ring of Fire." (I'm very fond of the collection in which it appears.) You do awesome historical settings.
