I forgot to bring my camera when I left the house to walk around the block this evening, but I saw a white hibiscus growing through a hedge and bees clustered around some brilliantly Halloweenish orange flowers. I have not had my head in the sand despite being under quite a lot of rocks this month, but I am still demoralized that an international friend's postcard could not reach me because of the intimidation theater of the tariffs. Nor am I thrilled that last week I had an unexpectedly bizarre interaction with a medical professional about Tylenol. I am much more cheered by the existence of ghost ponds and the renascent fern, not to mention the eleven-million-year-old asteroid no one knows yet where it hit. The Draconids peak on the eve of my birthday this year. Last week was still too many doctors, but I have hopes of fewer in the week to come. At least I managed for the first time on this new regimen to write about a film.

The general duration of the shower is supposed to be October 6–10, but I think we should try to find some darkness on the night of the 5th and see what there is to see. The radiant is exactly where you would imagine it to be.

They were treating me as pharmacologically reckless because I had taken two extra-strength because I live with multiple layers of chronic pain (which I chronically undermedicate in any case) and can't take NSAIDs. It was like hitting a pre-programmed script whose origins I didn't like the implications of. I kind of hung up on them.

The asteroid story puts me in mind of a story I heard the other day of someone who collects micrometeorites. Apparently if you go up onto a flat roof and just go through the dust and sand up there, looking at it under a microscope, some portion of it will reliably be micrometeorites, that, I gather, look quite different from terrestrial sand and itty-bitty pebbles.

The return of the holly fern is a GREAT story.
