Cormorant to rock, gulls from the storm

spatch took a proof of life when I was finally home which does indeed look much more like a person than my fluorescently washed out self-portrait of a couple of nights ago and amazingly more so than the traditional tubes-and-wires effigy of earlier in the week. It's peculiar to look back on. Concentrating to talk to doctors during that period worked well enough that I was asked more than once if I had a medical background and had to answer only in the sense of having had a lot of medical to deal with, but otherwise much of what I remember of the first few days involved drifting in and out of weird half-overheard half-sleep acutely punctuated by conversations or procedures. It was amazing to go back to sleep this morning after my medications without having to discuss them extensively with anyone.
fleurdelis41 seasonally sent me some cases of piracy tried at the Old Bailey, of which my favorites are the prosecutor no-show, the punch line of the stolen hats, and the dudes whose defense was having been very drunk at the time.

And, ha, excellent pirate defences. (I think one of my random Devon ancestors also pleaded drunkeness as an excuse - due to celebrating a friend's return from the Boer War - but that was for the more minor and distinctly less piratical Barnstaple crime of Swearing In His Own Home. If Barumites had not been banned from Swearing In Their Own Homes, I would know less about them).

I fished the account out of my docs, er, whether you want it or not, although it's not strictly one of the Swearing In Their Own Homes charges, although bad language is included, so I slightly misremembered.
DISORDERLY BEHAVIOUR WHILST DRUNK AT BARNSTAPLE Three charges of disorderly behaviour whilst drunk were heard at the Barnstaple Petty Sessions on Thursday. – William Toms, when charged, replied “I will say guilty.” – P.C. Drake stated the case, proving that the offence took place at 10.55 p.m., defendant being very drunk and making use of very bad language. – Toms’s excuse was that a friend came home from the seat of war and he was sorry that he took a drop too much. “Do the best you can” he pleaded to the Bench. – Fined 2s 6d. – In the case of Alfred Harris cabinet maker, it was proved by P.C. Drake that the offence took place at 10.15 on August 11th – Defendant was very intoxicated and shouted at the top of his voice, his conduct being most disgraceful. This defendant also said that two or three friends came home from the front. He was in a very weak state, and a little drop of drink took effect upon him. – The Mayor said that the excuse of friends home from the front was getting rather worn out.
