I only heard of her a few years ago (never took typing), and I was fascinated by the software developers just gave users a name and a photo of a model (who actually worked at a department store perfume counter), and yet it apparently created a whole character in people's minds, to the point where the software company (allegedly) got journalists calling up asking if they could interview Ms. Beacon.
Oh, that's fascinating! I actually just downloaded the free Mavis Beacon program, and it's just like I remember. Fun, and frustrating. I thought my typing was faster than it was (55 wpm adjusted for a few mistakes). I imagine I'll turn to the program now and then to see if I can improve that.
