May I leave you this laugh on my stone epitaph?
Rabbit, rabbit! November is upon us. I appreciate the Criterion Channel encouraging me with Queersighted: Queer Noir, though I must express my slight disappointment in any collection of same which does not include Johnny Eager (1942). I will console myself by re-rewatching Desert Fury (1947). I may even get that chance to yell at a dry stone wall in the Pioneer Valley.

I am afraid that we drove through Belchertown tonight, but we'll be back!

I have no explanation! Some kind of hang-up I don't know about with the rights?
I saw part of it on TV the other day and was reminded of Van Heflin's adorableness as Jeff. (I don't think he ever achieved adorableness in any other role.)
I have seen him in other roles where I find him endearing as well as interesting, but it is true that Jeff is a gin-soaked cinnamon roll and that's all there is to it.

Rewatching Desert Fury is always a good idea! May you get to yell at dry stone walls! <3

Thank you! Caged (1950) was the other obvious gap off the top of my head. It's less central than in some of the other films under discussion, but I also thought of Crime of Passion (1957) for the deliberate way it seems to lead with its f/f vibes as a contrast to the heteronormativity which throttles the rest of the plot. Agreed on The Big Combo. Repeat Performance for the character of William Williams? Victim (1961) really is just too late for noir, but I'd want to screen it at the end of the series anyway.

Thank you! I did get to!

(And I forgot to say that I feel that Cry of the Hunted has a similar vibe to The wild North, so they kind of go together in my head?)
(And I'm glad that yelling happened!)

In the lineup it goes! I love it very much.
Also, Caged and Crime of Passion are great choices, and I think that less central queer vibes count just as much--I think that's why Repeat Performance popped into my head? Since we're talking about William Williams and subtle queer vibes and Caged, Hope Emerson's character in Cry Of The City really fits here too!
Absolutely. An icon. And eventually I will remember the other character this conversation is reminding me of, but also shows up with the vibes.
Also, mentioning Repeat Performance made me think of Louis Hayward and how excellent his chemistry with Dennis O' Keefe is in Walk a crooked Mile (which I just had to look up, because in my head it was called "The big threat" and that didn't sound right...)
I've never seen that one! I see it suffers from Reed Hadley, but I'll grit my teeth.

It looked that way from the Criterion description! I'm looking forward to it.

I hope you do!
I didn't want to mention its unfortunate voiceover, because it would be a hard sell! XD It's really annoying and preachy, but at least the movie is less tragic than T-men, and Hayward and O'Keefe are delightful together, so it's still worth watching. (I can't remember it 100% accurately, but there's a scene in a hotel room with a twin bed set-up, a little bit like in The Big Combo, and O'Keefe asks Hayward if he snores. So many vibes.)

I really enjoy it.

Although I don't have access to the Criterion Channel (doesn't seem possible to subscribe from France, sadly) I am treating that collection as something of a rec list for films to find elsewhere. Thanks for the link!

You're welcome! I'm so sorry and a little annoyed it's not possible to subscribe from outside of North America and wish you luck tracking all the films down!
