My hat is frozen to my head

On my way home in the icy mixed rain that passes for our latter-day nor'easter, I found a twig of flowering tree on a streetlit lawn. There was no evidence of the rest of the tree. I brought it home for [personal profile] spatch.

It looks sort of like a hellebore flower--but they're ground growing, not tree growing. I can't imagine what tree flower would be in bloom right now that looks like that!

Maybe tulip maple (tulip poplar)? ... except it seems early for them..
