I woke up to the news yesterday morning and was just miserable. I'll never forget that Bellingcat clip where he angrily berates the guy who was supposed to arrange his assassination for failing at it!
T thought this was why he got shipped off to that place that sounds like something out of Dostoyevsky. To absolutely isolate him to murder him.

I left the house for the doctor's in the morning and didn't see the internet until I came home at night. It really was that immediate, one-two. So much for the past being a foreign country.

And it's sounding like murder direct: not secondhand by harsh conditions or neglect. I hate it. I checked in on FB last night and saw someone expounding that we shouldn't rush to sanctify Navalny because he wasn't a Western-style democrat and actually he held a lot of politically conservative opinions and what the fuck does that have to do with a citizen's right not to be murdered by their state? Show trials and state murders are not more acceptable just because you have decided their subjects weren't perfectly unproblematic! Good job acclimatizing yourself to totalitarianism! I don't trust people who run their morality—and their politics—on that kind of sliding scale. It doesn't traditionally end up anywhere good.

YES THIS, for godsakes people have the right not to be murdered.
What really bummed me out today was the police arresting people going to pay tribute, and taking away the flowers and tokens. And it's right before the election, too....it's so deliberate.

Right? It shouldn't be a complicated question!

I know. I am glad that people laid the memorials in the first place.

And they’d been trying the secondhand methods too, by the sound of it. Wonder if Putin decided those weren’t working fast enough, or if they were an (unsuccessful) attempt to obfuscate more direct methods by weakening him enough nobody’s be surprised by his death.
Or they were just cruelty for its own sake, is always the likeliest explanation I guess.

Thank you. I hadn't seen the piece by Massa Gessen. I should have looked for it.

Probably not mutually exclusive. Which is not a better answer.

Enough with the shockwaves of history, thanks.

Also, does August Diehl look a little like Conrad Veidt?

I really want to see it. At least it isn't following its source material so closely as to have been suppressed for thirty years.
Also, does August Diehl look a little like Conrad Veidt?
Not closely to me, but under the eyes and at the angles of his cheekbones, I can see it. (Veidt, of course, would have made a marvelous Woland.)

I’m a little surprised it wasn’t; but in the era of bit-torrents, it’s probably harder to do that. Shared files don’t burn, either.

I still picture David Bowie.
