I checked in on FB last night and saw someone expounding that we shouldn't rush to sanctify Navalny because he wasn't a Western-style democrat and actually he held a lot of politically conservative opinions and what the fuck does that have to do with a citizen's right not to be murdered by their state? Show trials and state murders are not more acceptable just because you have decided their subjects weren't perfectly unproblematic! Good job acclimatizing yourself to totalitarianism! I don't trust people who run their morality—and their politics—on that kind of sliding scale. It doesn't traditionally end up anywhere good.
