We also know, however, that as long as you keep them reasonably well-fed and let them off the chains once in a while, you can at least build a sort of wary mutual respect that comes from them no longer attempting to bite your arm off when you go for the food bowl.
(Unless it's just better to put them down out of hand. And, sometimes, that's sadly necessary...)
