Due to glancing childhood exposure to 1960's TV Batman and of course her name, I always took it for granted that Eartha Kitt was a were-cat, but this 1952 photo by Carl Van Vechten makes a really good case for mermaid:

I was also very struck by this shipwreck turning into an island. It appears to be the SS City of Adelaide.
