We knew not what the day had done—done for us at Trafalgar

I have voted. I hope it does what I want it to. Forward the ethical artichoke, and everything else from the garden we can get.

(And for God's sake, if you live in Massachusetts, when November comes vote yes on Question 3.)

I find the burning of the National Museum of Brazil almost numbing to think about, like the looting fifteen years ago of the National Museum of Iraq, the destruction of Syrian archaeological sites since then. So much time, so much survival by chance and care, so much knowledge and history and so much tangible past, gone. I saw a claim that the only object known to have survived the fire in the building itself was the Bendegó meteorite, which had already withstood the heat of atmospheric entry.

The past should be remembered. I read about the man who tends the graves of the Triangle Shirtwaist dead: "I made promises to these people." It makes sense to me.

I think I posted about it a few years ago, but it seems worth linking to Veronica Schanoes' novella "Burning Girls" again: https://www.tor.com/2013/06/19/burning-girls/

“Ironically,” he says, “many of the people who damaged this history are my heroes. Newman and I would have had a lot in common politically, but she’s the one who corrupted the story.”

Reminds me a little of the reporting around the murder of Kitty Genovese, much of which has since been debunked, but which did result in the creation of 911.

I wish I could vote early, vote often on Question 3. Failing that, I will pledge my native adorability and wobbly moral compass to the cause. And if you make impassioned stump speeches, invoke your godchild with their full consent. This is not trivial.
