I think I posted about it a few years ago, but it seems worth linking to Veronica Schanoes' novella "Burning Girls" again

I read it when it came out, but I still have a clear picture of its accompanying art, and its ending.

Reminds me a little of the reporting around the murder of Kitty Genovese, much of which has since been debunked, but which did result in the creation of 911.

If you haven't read it, there's an excellent book about just that: Marcia M. Gallo's "No One Helped": Kitty Genovese, New York City, and the Myth of Urban Apathy (2015). I believe it's where I learned about Genovese's girlfriend, with whom she was living at the time of the murder and who is still alive.
