Am I doing it? Can I have it all now?

Nothing makes an author feel more in touch with their juvenilia than building a bibliography that goes back seventeen years.

Nothing makes an author feel more out of touch in general than realizing just how many 'zines their career has apparently outlived.

In other news, I'm working on a website. Bibliography, interviews, biography, reviews. Tiny Wittgenstein is in a state of nervous prostration behind my desktop speakers. I am about to peel myself off the keyboard into bed. Self-promotion is exhausting.

Self-promotion *is* exhausting. Nothing is better designed to make you hate yourself. Nevertheless: resist. Speaking as someone who has been checking the dates of your stories as she reads ("Oh, that one was 2005. Ah, that one was 2015), I have to say, your stories had heft from the time you burst on the scene. Your writing has evolved, but it's a case subtle alterations in style and storytelling, definitely not a matter of needing to grow beyond your early work. It's like a very good singer or group--since you're listening to her, Kate Bush will do. Or we could pick someone your generation: Anaïs Mitchell, or the Decemberists.

I'm excited for your website!

Tell Tiny Wittgenstein that once you have transferred all your credits and achievements to your website, you won't have to boast of them (not that you did, or would, but anyway) any more, because you'll be able to point people to your website.

Of course, you'll need to keep it up to date, because the exhaustion of self-promotion is never-ending, but the principle stands.

You ARE doing it and you CAN do it and you're GONNA do it, because if you're going to win All the Awards, people have to see it and know it's real. Even when you barely believe it's real.

I'm going to introduce T. Witt to the trebuchet Child made of their over-door basketball hoop now.

Yes, it is exhausting, but worthwhile. Maybe Tiny W. can take a nap.

Oof. Mine only goes back only eight years, not seventeen, but the proportion of zines that are dead no is still... noticeable.

(Sorry for the really late comment, thesis and moving made it fairly impossible to keep up with Dreamwidth for a while!)
