He wants it all and he wants it his way

The first song I ever heard by Tom Petty was his cover of Dylan's "License to Kill." Between the violent news out of Las Vegas and the recent confirmation of Petty's death, it should not be difficult to guess my mental soundtrack at the moment.

[edit] Or perhaps he is not dead: the link I used earlier today has now posted a retraction. I will see what's said next. Nobody is retracting the news out of Vegas.

[edit edit] What is said next is that he has died.

Yes. I opened up twitter and saw a thing from Tom Petty's daughter excoriating Rolling Stone for speaking too soon. I wasn't sure if that was for real, so I checked Google news and found the article I linked to. I think it's fair to say he's in a very bad way. Just--maybe--not actually deceased yet.

Both of you have gone to bed, I hope, given time zones, but they've called it as 8:40 p.m. Pacific: Rolling Stone, LA Times.

Seemed like it was going to be just a matter of time...

Yes--too much news trigger, not enough empathy on the part of the news sites.

I liked what a tweeter said: "Tom Petty was reported dead and then not dead. Which makes sense because you can stand him up at the gates of Hell, but he won't back down."

I was exposed to Tom Petty heavily in the summer of 1990, when we basterdized two of his songs for the Hebrew language version of Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, the musical.

I highly recommend the lengthy Tom Petty documentary that's on Netflix right now. I watched it a few weeks ago, before it suddenly became topical.

So many of his songs are written on my heart and will never disentangle.
