Someday something's coming from way out beyond the stars

Tonight is the book launch for Caitlín R. Kiernan's Agents of Dreamland; it will be taking place at the Lovecraft Arts & Sciences Council in Providence and I will be reading beforehand and answering questions with Caitlín afterward. I hope to see some of you there! In the meantime, I should get ready to catch this train.

[edit] This announcement never crossposted because apparently LiveJournal has blocked all Dreamwidth webservers. Well, that explains why nobody commented. Way to go, LJ.

[edit edit] LJ-blocking situation now apparently resolved.

"Way to go LJ" might be accurate in a non-sarcastic way. Dreamwidth had a privacy breach, and it is suggested that people immediately change their passwords.

Well, it's not really "Dreamwidth" that had the breach; it was a sizable piece of internet infrastructure that affected DW *and* LJ, and tens of thousands of other sites. But it could well be that the lack of crossposting is related to it somehow.

I'm aware of the Cloudflare situation (and changed my passwords immediately, late Friday night), but the fact that the LJ-blocking blew up (http://dw-maintenance.dreamwidth.org/74731.html) a full day after that had been discovered and now seems to have been resolved (http://dw-maintenance.dreamwidth.org/74945.html) within twelve hours makes me think something else was going on.

[edit] A Dreamwidth administator offers the following explanation in comments:

"It's because we have multiple servers that all hit LJ relatively frequently (for importing and crossposting and stuff) -- we try to keep things under their access limits, but sometimes we trip their 'aaaaack there's a site out there that's hammering our servers, block them!' automatic detection and blocking. Previously we'd been whitelisted, but we forgot to let them know what our new IP addresses were after we switched hardware in December."
