Today we woke to the news that Richard Adams had died on Christmas Eve and Carrie Fisher had drowned in moonlight, strangled by her own bra. One of these I was sorry to hear about; the other just sucks. Sixty is younger than both of my parents. People who are in the middle of making new art are not supposed to be stopped. Planets aren't supposed to get blown up, either, but here we are.

This year has felt very deathly.

I think that's part of the reason people are so upset. It certainly is with me. Richard Adams I am sorry is no longer in the world, but he died at the end of his life, having written beloved and important books and not as far as I can tell engaged in any incomplete projects, and that if you ask me is a good way for an artist to go. Carrie Fisher had ongoing work and might not even have died if she hadn't been on a plane, where any emergency response is filtered through the time it takes to land. That, frankly, is lousy.

This year has felt very deathly.

Starting with the loss of David Bowie was a bang, but the wrong kind.
