Coins duller than carp scales, empty wells of ink

I feel like I've found the sequel to U.A. Fanthorpe's "Rising Damp": Marianna Burton, "The River Flowing Under the Bank of England Dreams of Power."

I am listening to shipwreck songs from [livejournal.com profile] ladymondegreen. Looking up the history behind James Taylor's "The Frozen Man" led me to Sheenagh Pugh's "Envying Owen Beattie" and thence to the poem above. Jo Bell's "Doggerland" engages in a similar way with time (and water), which is one of the reasons I like it best of the recent climate change series. It reminds me of Robert Macfarlane's The Old Ways (2012).

My mental state reverted to terrible around two o'clock in the morning, but I have had cats asleep on my lap for most of the afternoon, which is worth something.

2 AM mean reds suck, but I am glad you have kitties.

Which shipwreck songs?

Lap cats do a great deal to make things better.

It is probably my duty at this point (per previous conversations, etc) to murmur that of course I knew Ursula, and Rosie too. Whether they knew Marianna, I do not know - but she is of course friends of other friends. It really is a very small island.

Also, I too have had cats on me these last days, and it is certainly worth something.

Me too! Rosie used to work at UWE when I was first there, and we used to see Ursula at departmental meetings (or post-meetings) in pubs. Rosie is still around, as far as I know, though I've not heard any news of her recently.

(Btw, [livejournal.com profile] sovay, do you know Sheenagh? She's on my flist as [livejournal.com profile] sheenaghpugh - not a very effective disguise.)

Thank you for that soggy anthology. It's a tasty we share, as you know.
