As of this afternoon, I have a full screenplay for Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. Along with ethnographic commentary, interviews, and a version of the Sedna myth that I had not previously heard. All bilingual: in English and Inuktitut.

This improved my day a lot.

The book's available on amazon.com: they say four to six weeks to ship, so I suspect it may need to be ordered from Canada, but I have my fingers crossed. I re-watched the movie this afternoon, and it was also fascinating to see where the finished story departed from the screenplay, or where the images had been translated beautifully from words to film. (Either way, it's now gone on my list of Movies I Cannot Currently Afford But Which I Really Need To Own, Damn It, Why Don't I Make More Money As A Grad Student? Oh, Right.) Now I just have to find some plausible way to link Atanarjuat to Iliad 9 . . .

What's new in the Sedna myth?

I hadn't heard that, before she's married to the hunter who turns out to be a petrel, she's married to a man who turns out to be the family dog: and their children are the ancestors of all sorts of peoples, including spirits and Europeans. And I hadn't heard her titles: Uinigumasuittuq, the one who did not wish to marry; Kannaaluk, the great one down below. So I was pleased.

I'm going to pass this on to a friend of mine... because, well, we're LARPer geeks and soon will be playing a game in which we portray deities from various pantheons. She's playing Sedna.

So, there was a question of whether I'd be playing her or not, but it's decided--I am. I'm just using random online sources, keeping in mind that lots of that info can be whack. After working with the Mabinogion in the Welsh and then seeing what nonsense is online about Rhiannon...I'm taking everything with a grain of salt. If you have online recommendations, that be keen. What translation would you recommend? (since yours isn't out yet. :)) I'm sure our library would have it.
