With memories of days gone by

I seem to be in something of a livejournal minority in that, so far as I am concerned, 2005 did not wholly suck. The academic side of my life was more difficult this year, in unforeseen and some as-yet unresolved ways; my personal life was also not uncomplicated, including a death in the extended family and the death of someone I had known since very early childhood. This was no good at all. On the other hand, I also had two collections and a chapbook published, gained a close friend, and translated an entire myth from Akkadian. I don't want to live through 2005 again. But it could have been a much worse year.

Last night, I had dinner with [livejournal.com profile] gaudior, [livejournal.com profile] rushthatspeaks, and [livejournal.com profile] lignota, and then we (minus [livejournal.com profile] lignota and plus boy) brought hot cider, pots for banging, and went to meet [livejournal.com profile] nineweaving and [livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle on Cambridge Common for to wake the sun. I had a conch shell. [livejournal.com profile] nineweaving had mince pies and a lantern. [livejournal.com profile] adrian_turtle had oatmeal cookies. We feasted, poured a libation in cider, and made a racket. More importantly, we were not arrested. The sun had better come back now.

It is beginning, very faintly, to snow. I like this. May everyone have a better year.

Surely the sun had already woken on the Winter Solstice, and had just hit the snooze button...

Well, fair enough. We don't want Alpha Centaurai muscling in on the proceedings...

My snooze button gives me 9 more minutes. I think that suggests the sun's snooze button should give 9 more days.

Grin. That was fun, and you were grand to see.

(Oh, and the boy says he rather likes you. This is impressive. I suspect it has much to do with the fact that you are damned likable.)

2005 didn't suck for me. Some very nice stuff in it, some stuff I coulda done better at--lots of awful world-events and friend-events, but it was more on an even keel than many years have been, on a personal level.
