Lorre was a great actor, but I thought the movie needed more of a naif action-type leading man. Sydney Greenstreet, OTOH, was perfect for his role.
I really like him in that film, actually, in part because he's weirder than that heroic naïf. I saw it in 2007. His roles in The Verdict (1946) and Three Strangers (1946) are even better. He and Greenstreet were a magnificent pair.
