I've pondered at times the difference between sacrificing people with the intent of bringing about good (e.g. Mesoamerican flaying rituals to summon rain for crops) and sacrificing them with the intent of preventing evil (e.g. execution of prisoners to deter future criminals).
Whatever the difference, you can't tell me ours isn't a society that practices human sacrifice. We just do it mostly for secular reasons.
