In matters social, one's not on one's own

Rabbit, rabbit!

1. Tonight I drove out to Springfield for Gamefest at The Student Prince with [livejournal.com profile] rushthatspeaks, [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel, [personal profile] phi, M., and two excellent people whose online handles I don't know. Next year we're going earlier in the month, because it turns out that by eight o'clock on the last night of February, a great many items have been eighty-sixed from the special menu, but there was still gravlax and paté and alligator tail and I had a plate of game stew with spätzle on the side, full of delicious chunks of venison and bison and elk. People around me were eating things like Hasenpfeffer and pork knuckle and sauerbraten and some kind of schnitzel with mushrooms and cream sauce. There were also some solidly decadent desserts, including a fancy booze milkshake called a Chauvinette, and drinks that we realized were stunningly affordable not because Springfield is cheap, but because Boston is pricey. A great evening. I may live off rice cakes for the rest of the weekend, except that on Sunday I'm singing.

(We were thwarted in our desire to purchase paczki from the Big Y on our way home because the nearest store closed at eleven instead of midnight—in flagrant disregard of their hours listed online—and I can't see myself getting out to western Massachusetts again before March 4th, but we'll just have to make a point of it next year. Or find a Polish bakery in Boston. I bet that could happen.)

2. Rob is out of his cast! And his walking cast! He wore shoes on both feet today for the first time since Christmas! The orthopedic surgeon pronounced him good to go! Now he has no excuse for not helping me take out the trash tomorrow!

3. My poem "The Etruscan Prince" has been accepted by The Cascadia Subduction Zone. The title is deliberate; it came out of last year's discovery of a tomb in Tarquinia and resulting discussion.

I am going to sleep. Tomorrow I hope to visit a print shop. And write.

This had me ear wormed first by the king from that Bus Bunny cartoon, then by Bessie Smith singing "Gimme a pig's foot and a bottle of beer," and I'm probably just lucky I got away without the chorus of "The Kelligrew's Soiree" in there. No, brain, I will not go look up that last one to see whether it's "Kelligrews" or "Kettigrews."

I could wish it weren't so noisy sometimes.

You were so close! Perhaps the very Big Y that you resisted paczki in was the one I bought them in, on my way home from Chicopee. If I had gone through Springfield instead of taking the highway, I would have passed the Student Prince!

I will instruct my past self to wave at past you.

He wore shoes on both feet today for the first time since Christmas!

Hurray! I meant to congratulate Rob in person for being back in shoes, but I somehow forgot.

Good that Rob is out of his cast .. and using both feet at the same time.. grin.

That Gamefest sounds delicious. Hasenpfeffer I've not had in ages.

I'm sorry you missed the paczki, and I hope some Boston bakery will provide.

I hope all goes very well with your singing tomorrow, and that all is going well with print shops and writing and all the rest.

Glad Rob's out of his cast! Congratulations on your poem's acceptance! That was a very good one.

For pączki, try the bakery associated with the Polonia Cafe in South Boston. The Cafe itself is also very good - they have good pierogi and other stuff. There's one in Salem, too. Otherwise your closest bet for good Polish stuff is probably New Britain, CT.
Yay for Rob being cast-free, and for poetry publishing!

Now you do have at least one friend in the New Britain area! As of today, Other Kenjari and I live in Windsor, CT. :)

Oh, congratulations on the sale and Rob's foot being out of the cast. I hope you managed to get writing done, too.

Good luck with the concert!

Brilliant stuff! I'd love to beta-read it if you're willing.

I am glad that one has a home!
