Well, with worldwide destruction as a certain alternative, do I really have a choice?

Awesome: Today's mail contained my long-delayed delivery of Pacific Rim: Man, Machines & Monsters (2013), the accompanying art book to the film. I ordered it in July. I had to keep reordering it as Barnes & Noble kept informing me the book was not actually in print, despite the release date clearly on the order. I think it sold out its initial print run. Possibly its second. It is now in the same cardboard box as Mark Valentine's The Collected Connoisseur (2010) and Anne Ursu's Breadcrumbs (2011), my birthday presents from [livejournal.com profile] ashlyme and [livejournal.com profile] rushthatspeaks respectively, along with my birthday card from [livejournal.com profile] 4nt1g0n3.

Complicating factor: That box needs to be filled with other books and stacked downstairs with all the boxes from [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel's room because the movers are coming at nine in the morning. Then I need to pack all the kitchen equipment we've been using for the last month and three-quarters. Then I need to make sure all of my clothes are out of my dresser because while I moved them in drawers, I am not sure how professional movers feel about that sort of thing. And I did not do all of this earlier because I spent the entire evening buying the things we will need immediately in the new apartment tomorrow and doing laundry at my parents' house where the washing machine is neither in a basement nor disintegrating through the kitchen floor. (I don't have anything against the basement in the new place, it was just a luxury. I have a lot of things against the washing machine at Hall Ave.)

I will consider this move a success if I sleep tonight.

On the clothing-in-drawers issue, it might be worth your while to call the moving company and ask.

I seem to recall that I was told it was fine to leave stuff in, and what that particular team did was pull the drawers, move the furniture, put the drawers back in in the van, and strap them round to keep them closed after covering with moving blankets. Something like that. This was some years ago and practices could well vary from one place to another though.

ETA: timestamp confusion! too late, I hope it all went out with the least stress possible!

I hope your move goes well, your new apartment is warm, and that you get a chance to read Breadcrumbs very soon (because it's awesome.)

while I moved them in drawers, I am not sure how professional movers feel about that sort of thing

They all seem to issue dire warnings that doing it will damage your drawers. I don't know how many of them will do it anyhow if you insist you don't mind.

Yay! I'm glad The Connoissseur reached you safe and sound; I hope you enjoy it. Good luck with moving!

Pacific Rim: Man, Machines and Monsters is such an enormously pretty book.

Good luck.

I got a review copy the day before yesterday. I think you're right about it not having been in print. *g*

Not sure if I have time to write one any time soon! Since it's a review copy I requested from the publisher way back before I got so behind on things... before its publication date.

I'm very delighted for the awesome!

Unfortunately (or not?), my today's mail included a copy of Fifty Shades of Grey, sent from an unidentifed location in England.* I was vaguely aware that friends were passing one about, writing mocking notes in the margins as they read it, and passing it on, but I'd not been warned that I would be included in the chain.

I feel a curious combination of amusement, warm fuzzies, and sheer terror at actually feeling compelled to read it. I've been advised that I should, as an exercise in market research, but actually doing it is strangely intimidating.

*I'd actually had slight hopes when told a package with Royal Mail markings and the Irish form of my name on it had arrived in the post that it might be an entirely un-announced birthday gift from somebody in Belfast, but it's probably just as well.
