We being ourselves acquaintances of some standing
For the portion of my friendlist to whom this pertains first: anyone wishing to know how Aziraphale and Crowley occupied their spare time in the 1940's is advised to read the first eight poems in Rosemary Dobson's The Ship of Ice: with other poems (1948), because the answer is evidently inspiring that book.
For everyone else: I am now reading pretty much everything of Dobson's this site has to offer. Just pick a title you like. I started with "Greek Coins" and "The Stone Circles" and kept reading.

I do find myself wishing that the individual poems were given dates. I'm curious when "The Stone Circles" was written, although it's got what I imagine is a Fifties post-apocalyptic feel about it.
