Maybe I came too early, maybe I came too late

Despite staying home for the entire afternoon and evening, yesterday, in the main, blew truck nuts. I am not entirely sure what my health is doing, except it isn't good—I think my goal for this year is (a) not falling asleep between every item of programming (b) not losing my voice. I had weird, dizzily vivid dreams in which my brain mashed up what [livejournal.com profile] handful_ofdust's been telling me about Defiance with my longing for the sea: white-haired, chalk-eyed people on a rocky shore with an acrid orange sun hanging over the waves, turning everything metallic colors like an overpainted postcard; the sand and everything in shadow the same floating violet as afterimages. (Then I dreamed of having to drive Abbie somewhere for [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel, which was actually weirder.) My body is unconvinced it slept at all.

Nonetheless: I leave for Readercon this afternoon. I'm on two panels to start. I'm leading the first one. We will see what happens. I suspect I will have fun.

I will return when there's internet.

I wish you a fun and pleasant con, one that includes your own voice remaining with you. Best of luck with everything.

At the risk of telling you things you already know and/or find useless: when it is necessary to keep talking even though voice loss seems imminent (which, for my day job, is common, since I am literally paid for my ability to talk nonstop), I find that throat coat tea is invaluable. We captioners swear by it. Coconut water is also helpful (despite being trendy) - it coats better than water, without being sugar sticky like juice or full of protein strands like milk.

Triumph! Definitely a challenge to keep your voice in there - not just all the talking, but the incredibly dry air. I continue to find it amusing that the cooling properties of air conditioners were invented essentially by accident as a side effect of a really effective dehumidifier.

Oh, yeah. And for me, add to that my Seattle-influenced metabolism, whose idea of "what to do with water" is to say "eh, we have plenty of that, go dump it" instead of funneling it where it's actually needed... I spent the entire con drinking water and finding the bathroom. And still with the dry throat. Bah.

Have fun! The Boatman's Cure is very, very good; thank you!
