Saltpeter, John

After all the cleaning, all the cooking, all the chaos: it was a really good Fourth of July. [livejournal.com profile] fleurdelis28 wrote me afterward that I looked happier than she had seen me in a long time—I couldn't think of anything to write back except that I like being happy, because it's true. The strawberry ice cream came out the best in years. [livejournal.com profile] schreibergasse brought sparklers and [livejournal.com profile] sharhaun brought moscato which he filled with crushed strawberries and blueberries and made sure we knew it wasn't sangría. [livejournal.com profile] gaudior and B. did not stay for 1776 (1972), but then neither did anyone else after the first third, because dinner was happening. [livejournal.com profile] derspatchel took a picture of me which I do not hate. My brother grilled all the things.

There was an electrical storm leading up to the fireworks (cloud-to-cloud lightning, that hot white-violet chain-linking its way across the night overcast) and a cloudburst in the middle. I held on to someone I loved and stared into the sky, soaked to the skin and seeing colors. We walked home singing Kate Bush (by way of the Ukulele Orchestra) and Kipling.

And my poem currently titled "Danger UXO" has been accepted by Not One of Us. So there's that as well.

I'm glad all that ridiculously hot weather is putting itself to good use in spectacular thunderstorms. Sounds like a perfect party.
(Also, yay poem acceptance).

grilled all the things.

Good thing I was already planning to do grilled ribs for dinner tonight, because otherwise that would have sparked An Intervention.

Celebration!

It is absolutely terrific that you're happy.

I held on to someone I loved and stared into the sky, soaked to the skin and seeing colors.

It doesn't get better than that!

This was a lovely post to read first thing in the morning. Cheers!

I'm going home to see my wife.

Right after I make these mailing labels....

I am so glad you threw a party and people came. See?

Dude! I forgot to comment on the other poem!

Your fourth sounds fabulous, if slightly more lightning filled than most. May you have many happy returns of the day.

I managed to see the last two-thirds of 1776 by dint of coming late to a party where they were showing it. Much amusement was derived from the fact that our household showed up at the same time as the delegation from NJ in the film. There was applause.

It's always handy to know someone whose remit is to grill all the things.

Also, congrats!

Well done on all counts. Stay happy.

Likeable pictures are a rare thing, in my experience. I mean ones we ourselves like. Nobody else seems to take issue with most photographs of people other than themselves, but it's very tricky to approve of images of our own faces :-P

I'm glad you had a very good Fourth!

Congratulations on the acceptance! I'm glad that poem's found a place so quickly--it deserves one.

You're most welcome. I'm sorry I've not managed to go back and say more about the poem, yet.

I like the slight change in the name--it's more period, so far as I know, and it just plain works.

Sounds like you're having a good summer, then? I'm sending you some love across the Atlantic.
Btw, I just found this, by way of 3QuarksDaily: http://www.salon.com/2012/07/05/thank_you_for_killing_my_novel/

Thought you might like that.

It sounds simple to some people, but being happy is a wonderful feeling. I'm glad you had this good day, though I'm here late to read about it. Hope many more follow... :)
