Saltpeter, John
After all the cleaning, all the cooking, all the chaos: it was a really good Fourth of July.
fleurdelis28 wrote me afterward that I looked happier than she had seen me in a long time—I couldn't think of anything to write back except that I like being happy, because it's true. The strawberry ice cream came out the best in years.
schreibergasse brought sparklers and
sharhaun brought moscato which he filled with crushed strawberries and blueberries and made sure we knew it wasn't sangría.
gaudior and B. did not stay for 1776 (1972), but then neither did anyone else after the first third, because dinner was happening.
derspatchel took a picture of me which I do not hate. My brother grilled all the things.
There was an electrical storm leading up to the fireworks (cloud-to-cloud lightning, that hot white-violet chain-linking its way across the night overcast) and a cloudburst in the middle. I held on to someone I loved and stared into the sky, soaked to the skin and seeing colors. We walked home singing Kate Bush (by way of the Ukulele Orchestra) and Kipling.
And my poem currently titled "Danger UXO" has been accepted by Not One of Us. So there's that as well.

(Also, yay poem acceptance).
grilled all the things.
Good thing I was already planning to do grilled ribs for dinner tonight, because otherwise that would have sparked An Intervention.

Thank you!

There were, as a matter of fact, ribs. There are not that many left.

It is absolutely terrific that you're happy.

I prefer it to the alternative.

It doesn't get better than that!

It made for one of the better fireworks I can remember!

Right after I make these mailing labels....
I am so glad you threw a party and people came. See?

I wasn't expecting them not to! I'd promised them ice cream!
(Understood.)

I managed to see the last two-thirds of 1776 by dint of coming late to a party where they were showing it. Much amusement was derived from the fact that our household showed up at the same time as the delegation from NJ in the film. There was applause.

The best lightning-filled Fourth I can remember was the year the Casco Bay fireworks in Portland were canceled because of a hurricane. Everyone watched the lightning and the sky-shattering thunder instead. It was epic. But this was a contender.

Totally deserved!

I have never liked photographs of myself except in rare instances, usually when you can't see my face. I'm not sure I ever got over seeing myself in profile for the first time in a video from some classmate's birthday party in elementary school. This is one of the rare photos I might actually be all right with. I am smiling. (If you have access to Rob's Facebook, he's posted it by now.) I don't even think it makes me look like a complete idiot.

Congratulations on the acceptance! I'm glad that poem's found a place so quickly--it deserves one.

Thank you.

I like the slight change in the name--it's more period, so far as I know, and it just plain works.

Btw, I just found this, by way of 3QuarksDaily: http://www.salon.com/2012/07/05/thank_you_for_killing_my_novel/
Thought you might like that.

Thought you might like that.
"One time Ben got mad and spoke in the voice of Patrick, but just once. He was sorry.
"Ed was very kind."
That's lovely.

Thank you. Today was quiet; it contained pizza and very few people. That was good, too.
