Is "I have no idea, but I like it" an acceptable answer?
It's almost as oblique as "The Rolling of the Stones." (Lyrics here.) The first time I heard it, I thought the woman in the white gown had a supernatural air -- as the whole song had the flavor of an older time, somewhere between broadside ballads and the nineteenth century -- and then when I listened again, I thought there was no reason she couldn't be simply the daughter of a rich family. (Though she reminds me a little of Angela Carter's eponymous "Lady of the House of Love" with her dress that's too long for her, like a child playing dress-up "in among her heirlooms." That is probably unsubstantiated by the text.) I'm not even sure if it's a love song. "Her wealth and position put off my affection / But she turned my direction, changed my ambition . . . for a moment or two." Maybe it's a little like what might happen if the lady of the house didn't run away with her gypsy Davy. "I kicked at the hem to turn her around." Whatever happens between them, it doesn't last.
