I was answering an e-mail about family stories with rose_lemberg when my mother walked up and handed me a letter from one of her cousins, explaining how we're related to Bel Kaufman, who just turned a hundred today.

(My great-great-grandfather's older brother, Jacob Kaufman, was her grandfather. My relation to Sholem Aleichem is only by marriage.)

That was pleasingly random.

That's wonderful. She sounds a very awesome relation to have.*

*The only relations of mine whom I ever find out about seem to be marginally obscure American Civil War figures. I keep hoping to at least be told of some interesting hardingfele or nyckelharpa player, somebody who might make up for Kirsten Flagstad rolling over in her grave at how I sing, but no such luck.
