I had a music teacher in elementary school who had this ethic for any musical instrument, insisting that it's disrespectful to step over anything imbued with a soul (as they all are, you see). Because of this, I now find it distasteful to step over someone lying on the floor, no matter how informal or friendly the circumstance.
