A borrower of the night for a dark hour or twain

An unspeakably early dentist's appointment this morning and I've spent the rest of the day reading and cross-referencing articles that interest me much less than does Catullus. On the bright side, my poem "Radio Banquo" has been accepted by Strange Horizons. If I'm going to continue this trend of writing poems based on Shakespeare I've seen (or taken part in: this one was triggered by the Macbeth reading Eric organized in December), I'm behind on Twelfth Night and Othello, but it's a good sign for Timon of Athens in May.

Congratulations!

I'm sorry for the awfully early appointment and for the less-interesting-than-Catullus articles, although I hope both have been useful to you.

Thank you!

You're welcome!

Well, many things are less interesting than Catullus.

Another one I wish I could read in the original. If only maintaining and improving the language I need didn't take up so much effort... Ah, well, that's the way of things. But if the SFnal "learn a language in your sleep" thing ever becomes available, Latin's going to be pretty high on my list.

I had one friend at college who, a third generation classicist, who insisted that Catullus was a better essayist than a poet. I've no way of judging the matter, but I've always wondered if he was a bit off or not.

Bless Eric for all the amazing things he organizes. Has he yet mentioned to you the Procul Harem / Jethro Tull concert in June? His favorite band and mine in a very rare joint appearance. We had some notion of trying to get a group of folks together to go, and I suggested he ask you if you'd care to join us.

Congratulations on your Shakespearean forays, once and future. I long to try my hand. I obsess over Shakespeare almost as much as perhaps even more than I obsess over Jesus, and why not. The two greatest enigmas of storied humanity.

Completely off-topic: I would like to invite you to a cherry-blossom viewing party, but I don't have an e-mail for you. Mine is kenjari at gmail dot com.

Excellent!

If you do a whole series of Shakespeare-inspired poems, that will be wonderful. I'm glad the Banquo one has found a good home.

Sing with me now!

[ORIN]
When I was younger, just a bad little kid,
My mama noticed funny things I did,
Like shootin' puppies with a B B gun
I'd poison guppies, and when I was done
I'd find a pussycat and bash in its head
That's when my mama said

[CRYSTAL, RONETTE, CHIFFON]
What did she say?

[ORIN]
She said, "My boy, I think someday
You'll find a way
To make your natural tendencies pay
You'll be a dentist
You have a talent for causin' things pain
Son, be a dentist
People will pay you to be inhumane
Your temperament's wrong for the priesthood
And teaching would suit you still less
Son, be a dentist
You'll be a success"
