O lucem candidiore nota

Someone just quoted Catullus 16 on The Daily Show. My life is complete.

Awesomosity!

Was the quote accurate?

I'm guessing the translation Mr. O'Monocle gave was not!

(I once briefly dated a Russian psychology student whose dating-site handle was "Catullus", after her favourite poet!)

Sometimes, I wish my state allowed polygamy. *swoons*

Thanks for the explanation--I'm pleased and amused.

Am I correct in thinking that "pedicabo te" is also thought to have been a generalized insult, on the lines of "fuck you"?

http://woolfandwilde.com/2009/10/women-in-love-a-mendicant-who-craves-your-bounty/ Is actually unrelated to aforesaid declarations; I just found the site and think it's very cool.

Can you find a link to the segment containing the quote?

[identity profile] ron-drummond.livejournal.com 2010-04-21 07:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I see it's up as the first offering on the DS website -- and indeed it's hilarious -- but the video itself has no specific URL, and will be displaced tomorrow, and I've not yet found it on YouTube.

Oh it is, yes, thank you. I had come upon it earlier on the site's homepage, and the couple three times I tried to call it up with a fuller URL failed. Thanks for finding it -- it's priceless.

There should be more Latin obscenity on television. Spartacus: Blood and Sand doesn't count.

I've never encountered this of which you speak, but I infer that this is a good thing.

I'm amazed there's not more Latin obscenity--despite my lack of Latin, I would, were I to be producing a television show, be tempted beyond resisting to insert some Latinised combination of the equivalents of the Seven Deadly Words, simply for the pleasure of getting away with it.

I saw it and I agree that it was absolutely brilliant. :D
