They shifted the statues for harboring ghosts

And for New Year's, Eric took me and Anita and Eddy to the Boston Pops with Amanda Palmer. There turned out to be dinner involved. And Bizet and Brecht. And a tippy moocow. And a cover of Lady Gaga (with feminist, post-structuralist critique). And a short film with Bill Nighy. I said hi to Neil Gaiman for an editor I know. I consider it highly unlikely that this will be the template for next year, but I grant it a surprisingly auspicious start.

Happy—and better—2010, all.

Vladimir Horowitz, "Pictures at an Exhibition: Con mortuis in lingua mortua"

Horowitz and Schnabel were spotted one time on 42nd St, going into a seedy jazz dive (tm). The aficionado who recognised them couldn't resist following. Eventually he worked up the courage to approach their table and murmur "Maestri - I'm so sorry, I do have to ask: what on earth are the two of you doing here?"

"We've come to hear him," they said, nodding at the man on the piano in the corner.

"But - but - but! You are the two finest pianists of the century? Why...?"

"Because he's better than us."

The man on the piano? Was Art Tatum.
