The sanitized versions of fairy tales leave out what matters: the scary parts. The Grimms took out the sex, and the Victorians took out the horror (and the rest of the sex), so what's left? And why do we care? What is it about "fairy tales" that really make people uncomfortable—and how can this be effectively used in the modern genre?

This should keep me busy. The reading on Friday is not finalized, but might be new prose. The music jam is Jane Yolen-related; I will be bringing ballads and things like ballads. Midrash had better count as the Bible, otherwise I got nothing. Hope to see you there!

On Saturday, before the Bible panel. Which may be obvious, but I don't know how late programming goes on Sunday.

We'll also be doing things like the Odin-Loki duet at open filk on Friday. I don't know how that lines up with the music jam.

The filking sessions overlap, I think, but they are not the same thing—the music jam is in honor of Jane Yolen's birthday, hence my declaration of repertoire. I asked what she liked and was told "(Child) ballads, possibly with new/modern twists . . . ?" I'm not sure how many singable Child twists I know, as opposed to the innumerable prose and poetic reworkings, but I certainly know things that could be mistaken for balladry at twenty paces.

Usual boring reasons--work, family, distance--it's not so far, really, but to go and come back, especially at night (since it's your Friday evening panel [and reading] that I'd want to see), especially when the weather's uncertain, is too daunting.

But Readercon. I have made it two years now, if only for an afternoon, so I hold out hopes for this year, too.

Thank you! Yeah. I have to remember not to babble like a brain transplant when around her. She wrote one of the earliest books I can attest to reading (Commander Toad in Space, which you totally need to get for Peter at the appropriate age) and all sorts of stuff that generally bent me in elementary and high school.
